Welcome to Biology 104 Human Biology Online. The course is divided into 6 weeks beginning Monday 18 May and ending Friday 26 June.
This page is the first preparation page (or "prep page" for short) for Human Biology Online. There is a prep page for each week. If you visit the front page for the course it should always be updated with the current information for the class.
Each week will begin on Monday; new prep pages will be posted no later than Sunday evening. For the first five weeks, assignments are due no later than 5 pm on the following Sunday. During the last week assignments must be posted no later than 5 pm on Friday 26 June. Assignments posted later than these dates will not receive credit.
The first week is devoted to an introduction to the course and its resources, to the participants in the class, an Introduction and the Scientific Method, Molecules, and Cells. Follow the links in the previous line to identify the work that must be completed for this week. You should also explore the course web site and become familiar with its layout.
Please note that we will not be using WebCT for this course. We will use this site which is powered by an open source content management system entitled Drupal. You should bookmark this site and come directly here for the duration of the course.
I have set up accounts for each of you on a companion site (Human Biology Online Student Pages) where you will post your activity reports. You should have received login instructions at your WSC email account. Please contact me at bhoagland@wsc.ma.edu if you did not get the information or are having difficulty logging into that site. Please note that you can't login into this site and make changes. You can, however, post comments without logging in. You can only login in to your student page site.
There is no text required for this course because there are very good resources available on the web. However, if you prefer to read an actual book for background information I suggest you purchase a used Human Biology textbook online that has been published in the past several years. DO NOT PURCHASE A NEW BOOK FOR HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. INSTEAD PAY LESS THAN $10 FOR A USED BOOK.
Because this course is compressed into 6 weeks (it normally runs for 15 weeks), we have lots of topics to investigate. Each topic has its own web site that can be accessed from the links below:
I will be available online in the Biology Department Chat Room at 9:00 PM Wednesday 21 May. You are not required to visit this chat room.
You should have submitted responses to the following discussion forum topics by 5 PM Sunday 25 May:
