Objectives

Learning Objectives

Students will gain an understanding of:

1) The classification of foragers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, predators, parasites etc.).

2) The differences, costs, and benefits of generalists and specialists.

3) The basic elements and assumptions of optimal foraging models.

4) The optimal foraging patch model (Charnov's Marginal Value Theorem): the assumptions, how to draw the model and manipulate the graphs under various situations, and the preditions of the model.

5) Tests of the MVT discussed in class and in your text.

6) Honey bee communication and how it is used to convey foraging information.
