| Variation that is and is not inherited |
- Individuals of the same
species differ in their characteristics. Some of these characteristics are
inherited from parents and some are not.
|
- Look at the variation in individuals. Variation among domestic
dogs or cats provides familiar animal examples, as well as looking at variation
in humans.
- Look at variations in plants that they have grown from seeds
of the same type.
- Make frequency tables of the number of students with
certain characteristics such as tongue rolling vs. non-tongue
rolling.
- Make frequency tables of non-inherited variation such as the
number of students with long hair/short hair.
|
- Help students to recognize that although humans, other animals,
and plants inherit characteristics that do not change throughout their life,
there are other inherited characteristics that are affected by 'life style' and
external conditions, e.g. weight, height.
